How do you handle taking a loss?
My favorite American football team lost today. Winning would have meant going to the championship, so this loss is pretty painful. To be sure, the other team was better today. But a wise man once said “two things can be equally true”… So lamenting that poor officiating and injuries played a part in the outcome isn’t, I think, excuses but rather explanations. Yes, the opposition was superior…but they caught a few breaks, as well.
This raises the old “what kind of loser are you?” question…
We have been told “nobody likes a sore loser”, “it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game”, and “to be a good loser is to learn how to win”…
However, Vince Lombardi (one of the most successful American football coaches in history) hated good losers, because according to him: “Good losers get used to losing”.
So, exactly, what kind of loser are you?
