So, the history of the development of Valentines’s day is a bit murky and unclear. Apparently, we have few provable facts to help us understand the origins. We’ve got dark pagan Roman fertility festivals, at least three people identified as St. Valentine, a poem by Chaucer, and by the 1700s an emphasis on exchanging love notes…
By the 1800s, commercially printed cards were being used and from that point forward, though the holiday wasn’t created by greeting card companies, they certainly started benefitting. But, there’s a wrinkle in countries like Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Vietnam: White Day. In The U.S., you get one shot, February 14th. Valentine’s Day. If you mess up and don’t buy chocolate for someone who buys you candy…awkwardness might be the best thing you can hope for. However, in the aforementioned Asian countries, February 14th is still Valentine’s Day, but the tradition is a little different: ladies give gents presents, but not the other way ‘round. That’s left for White Day, a month later, March 14th.
We can blame capitalism or the patriarchy, but I’ll simply say this: Lads, enjoy the benefit of the ability to keep track of all the treasures you collect in February and make sure to take advantage of the chance to return the favor a month later.
