It’s just a short walk from my mansion to my yacht…
As we looked out over the lake, someone said “Look at that yacht!” and it reminded me of two cases where the adopted word in Japanese doesn’t quite fit the original image in English, for an American.
If you do a web search for the word “yacht”, the vast majority of the images that come up will look something like this:
The word the person was looking for is the pretty self-explanatory “sailboat”. Just to be funny, I said to them: “You might know someone who owns a sailboat…you don’t know anyone who owns a yacht.
This immediately made me think of another “what I say versus what you imagine” gap…
When I first came to Japan, I moved into a “one-room mansion”. To an American, one-room and mansion are words that will never, ever go together. Again, do an image search of mansion. The results…
The idea of a mansion to the average American is very different than the typical Japanese person’s intention. I would have loved to have lived in the above accommodation. Alas, my place looked more like this:
There’s nothing wrong with an apartment where you can stand in the middle and touch opposite walls, but calling it a mansion might lead your American acquaintances to think you’re more of a high-flyer than you really are.
There’s nothing wrong with that, either.

その言葉は、あなたが意図する言葉でしょうか？
私のマンションからヨットまでは歩いてすぐなのですが…。
湖を眺めていると、誰かが「あのヨットを見て！」と言った時に、アメリカ人にとって、日本語で使われている言葉が、英語が意味するイメージに全く合わないという2つのケースを思い出しました。

その人が意味していたのは、明らかに「sailboat」という単語です。
「sailboat」を所有している人を知っているかもしれないが、「yacht」を所有している人を知らないかもよ、と茶化しました。（上から3枚目の画像）
このとき、「私の言っていることあなたの想像すること」のもうひとつのギャップの例を思い出しました。
日本に来た当初、私は「ワンルームマンション」に引っ越しました。
アメリカ人にとって、「one-room」と「mansion」は、決して、一緒にならない言葉です。

一般的なアメリカ人にとっての「mansion」のイメージは、一般的な日本人の意図とは大きく異なるものです。
私は上記のような宿泊施設に住んでみたかったですが、残念ながら、私のところはもっとこんな感じでした。（上から5枚目の画像）
真ん中に立って反対側の壁に触れることができるような「マンション」は別に悪いものではありませんが、それを英語で「mansion」という言葉を使うと、アメリカ人の知人はあなたを実際よりもお金持ちな人だと思うかもしれません。
