Do you have few friends or a few friends?
It’s a small point, but…
Using “a” in some sentences completely changes the tone of the message. Yup, one little letter.
Please consider these two sentences:
・I have little money.
・I have a little money.
The first sentence gives a negative impression, one that gives the listener the image that I’m broke or close to it.
The latter sentence gives the impression that while I might not be able to buy the Bentley I want right now, I’m doing okay.
That’s it…one letter, totally different image.
・She has few books.
・She has a few books.
・They have little time.
・They have a little time.
・I’ve got few friends in Tokyo (and it’s soul-crushingly lonely).
・I’ve got a few friends in Tokyo (and they keep me thoroughly entertained).

些細なことですが、、、。
文章によっては「a」を使うことで、メッセージのトーンがガラリと変わります。
そうです、たった1文字。
この2つの文章を考えてみてください。
・I have little money.
・I have a little money.
前者は、「私は無一文かそれに近い状態だ」というネガティブな印象を聞き手に与える文章です。
後者の文は、今欲しいベントレー（高級車）は買えないかもしれないけれど、まあまあやっているという印象を与えます。
そうです、たった1文字で全く違うイメージになります。
・She has few books. （彼女は本をほとんど持ってない。）
・She has a few books. （彼女は本を結構持っている。）
・They have little time.（彼らはほとんど時間がない。）
・They have a little time.（彼らには少し時間があります。）
・I’ve got few friends in Tokyo （and it’s soul-crushingly lonely).（東京にはほとんど友達がいない。そしてそれは魂が抜けるほど孤独である).
・I’ve got a few friends in Tokyo (and they keep me thoroughly entertained).（私は東京に数人の友人がいる。そして彼らは私を徹底的に楽しませてくれる）
